Learn Japanese by playing RPG

I’m currently studying Japanese, my goal is to be able to play japanese RPGs by next year ^^; and watching anime without sub the following year.

In my quest of learning Japanese, I stumbled these two games, Slime Forest and Knuckles in China Land. Both are free RPG games aimed to help you study Japanese.

Slime Forest

This game is a multi platform game for Windows, Mac, and Linux. I have this game currently installed on my macbook running OSX tiger. the appearance of this game is very NES (Nintendo) like retro style RPG, but don’t get it wrong, even tho the project was started at 2003, last update for this project was 25th May 2007, which means that this project is pretty much alive.

When you battle the monster, a kana word will pop above the enemy, then you have to type the correct romaji to kill the monster ^^.

Visit their official site, lrnj.com to learn more and download the game (direct download).

Knuckles in China Land is a Learn Japanese Game combined with a console-style RPG (Role-Playing Game).Gameplay is similar to traditional console RPGs, with the exception of the battles. In these battles enemies take on the form of Hiragana, Katakana, Kanji (or Japanese, Indonesian, & German) vocabulary.

This game is a windows game. and you need DirectX 9.0c and .NET framework 1.1 to play this game. Last update for this game was 6th September 2006.

I’ve played Slime Forest before. Got extremely bored of it after 30 minutes. The way I learnt Japanese was just from watching anime, then after a trip to Japan, I decided to go for proper classes and that helped me greatly in being able to read and write. During that of course I read Japanese manga and played the occasional galge to keep up with my kanji. Though now I’ve forgotten a lot of kanji as I don’t practice as often as I did during classes.

hmm, i never heard of those games lol
Might try them out one day.

I did a few years of Japanese in high school, so I got the basics but no where near enough to actually read and write properly. Best I could do is prolly get around Japan, but initiating a casual conversation is still far from my grasp.

That’s cool. Learning japanese through an r.p.g. sounds better than reading books or taking a class :D

Of course i could never learn kanji. I had enough trouble getting through my spanish classes in high school.

No comprende ^^;

Ehem. Watching anime without subs in 2 years ? Good luck! I am sure that you will need it.

Oh yeah, you should buy a Japanese electronic dictionary. That will surely help you, well, at least it helped a lot in my case. If you can’t find it there, then you can buy it later if you visit Japan.

hehe, when I say watching anime without subs, I didn’t expect to understand 100%, 40-50% should be more than enough :p

my main goal is to be able playing japanese games! many great japanese games are left untranslated :(

Try playing Super Robot Wars series. It is the ultimate exercise (perhaps). Anyway, I learned that (this should be very obvious though), the phrases in games are rarely used in daily life, and on the other hand, daily life words are rarely applied in games because they are too common, not dramatic.
I think the same goes for English though.

I started learning japanese in January this year. It’s really something to spend your life on. I hope to be able to play japanese games and watch anime without subs some time in the future as well. But I think that will take a long long time, since it’s too many kanji to learn.

Keep it up though. Japan is our hobby after all ;)

hehe yeah, I hope I can learn japan faster~

plenty of good untranslated japanese game out there :p

Thanks for the info will look into them

anime w/o subs?

it’s possible depending on what you watch….
i’ve been watching anime for about 5 years and can understand enough for more slice of life animes but dont understand much when it comes to deep conversations on politics or technical terms.

i’ve been able to watch doramas w/o subs so there is hope for you! im sure the power of your fetish will guide you through the difficulites haha

I have been learning Japanese for a few years, and visted the country for about 3 weeks. Though i don’t now as much as i should in 3 years, but, im getting more into it, unless im just at the tip were im learning new words which i use everyday. The best way I feel that im going to progress faster is just keep everything in Japanese. I think im going to install a japanese windows xp. (as i know windows xp like the back of my hand. should be ok.) ima nanji desu ka? ano…….. gogo juichi-ji desu. Just keep talking in japanese, as much as you know, anytime of the day, using it in everyday life. mizu kudasai! you know, whatever. Thats all i can say. Good luck tabemonno!
